WHEN ANSWERS AREN’T ENOUGH
Today is two days before the wedding of my daughter, my youngest child. If I was to try to explain how I felt, I simply couldn’t begin to share it. There are so many details to think about, tasks to accomplish, and frankly, I feel utterly incapable of getting anything done. My baby is getting married. I’m obviously proud and joyful, but there are other things going on as well. We had a staff prayer time like we usually do to start our workday. Today, I tried to share some of the stress that I feel. The feedback which was received seemed very stale. There were many platitudes and scriptures spoken. I should have left encouraged, but I felt even more inadequate and alone. As I left the time of prayer to come to my office, I was prompted to look up a song that Ronda and I have sung over the years. It is by Scott Wesley Brown, a composer of Christian music from the 1970’s and 1980’s. I remember singing it at the First Baptist Church of Lake City Florida and the response from our pastor’s wife, Pat Davis, sticks with me vividly. She shared what those words meant to her as a pastor’s wife with all the heartache she had and today it still rings true. Let me share them with you:
When Answers Aren't Enough
Song by Scott Wesley Brown
You have faced the mountains of desperation
You have climbed, you have fought, you have won
But this valley that lies coldly before you
Casts a shadow you cannot overcome
And just when you thought you had it all together
You knew every verse to get you through
But this time the sorrow broke more than just your heart
And reciting all those verses just won't do
When answers aren't enough, there is Jesus
He is more than just an answer to your prayer
And your heart will find a safe and peaceful refuge
When answers aren't enough, He is there
Instead of asking why did it happen
Think of where it can lead you from here
And as your pain is slowly easing, you can find a greater reason
To live your life triumphant through the tears
When answers aren't enough, there is Jesus
He is more than just an answer to your prayer
And your heart will find a safe and peaceful refuge
When answers aren't enough, He is there
My word to myself and to those who read this is life gets messy, life doesn’t always make sense. There are times when you will feel alone and discarded. You may feel like an insurmountable mountain stands before you and there is no backing up. Hearts will break. Sorrows will come. Friends will move or reject you. Co-workers will become self-absorbed and neglect you. People will share a scripture that most times would lift you up, but now seems fake and childish. In all these situations, Jesus is enough, Jesus will always be enough, and most importantly Jesus Never Fails. Maybe you don’t need this word today. May I be so bold to say that you will someday. Maybe not today, but life changes, sometimes too quickly. Remember the words of that old song, “When answers aren’t enough, there is Jesus” I tell you the truth, it will be a game changer in your life.
Blessings,
Marty
