Mirror, Mirror on the Wall!
James 1:22-24
New King James Version
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was
If losing weight could be categorized as an Olympic sport, Ronda and I might be gold medal contenders. I cannot begin to recount the number of times we have attempted to lose weight and been rather successful at it. Even as I type, we have begun a renewed attempt at the world record. God is giving the decrease; we are being faithful!
Funny thing about losing weight. No matter how much you lose, it is difficult or even impossible to get the image of “fat Marty” out of my head. I look in the mirror and forget what I really look like. When my weight is increasing, I look in the mirror and see a much skinnier version in my mind than what the mirror shows me. When I’m on a downward trend, I see a much fatter version of myself.
James says it's vital for a Christian to look in the mirror intently. In this case, the mirror is not a silver-lined piece of glass it is the Word of God. God’s Word gives us a true reflection of ourselves in His eyes. The warning is this, however, no matter how important it is to see ourselves as God sees us, it is even more important to remember truthfully what we look like to God when we close the Bible and go about our daily lives.
I would like to think that most Christians spend a few minutes in God’s word every day, but maybe I’m being generous. I would also like to think that most Christians hear a great sermon that challenges us each week, but maybe here I am also being naïve. I believe the most important thing we can do daily is the get into God’s Word.
The last thing I want to share is this. Don’t forget what you look like. Don’t be like the person in James who stares at his image and walks away. For all his peering, he forgets what he saw. It does him no good. Just a waste of time. That’s sad, don’t you think?
As we head towards the end of Lent, keep on your path to seeking God. Don’t get caught up in your sacrifice. Trust God in your lack. Honor Him with your hunger, whether it’s for food, friends, money, image etc. Jesus is the answer to all our needs, just as He is the complete Savior for our sin and the provider for our eternal home.
Be encouraged today to look and remember.
Blessings,
Marty
