The Likeness of Christ

Reunions are fun if not just a bit daunting or even scary. It is fun to get back together with friends and family but there is always the inner turmoil, “what if no one recognizes me or what if I don’t recognize so and so?” Several years ago, we had the opportunity to attend a class reunion for my wife Ronda. It was in Zephyrhills Florida, and we participated in all the events except for the cocktail hour. (Go figure!) It was fun for me to watch people’s reactions to seeing each other and hearing Ronda’s report about each encounter. Of course, there were a few cheerleaders who looked exactly the same, same hair, same dress size, same nauseating conversation, but there were a couple of cheerleaders for whom the years were not great. Some of the athletes were trim and fit and others were grossly out of shape, and most had lost a lot of hair. For the most part, if you looked hard enough you could still see a glimmer of the person you knew in high school. For many there was a telltale look, the toss of the head or some personality trait that always seemed to shine through. Some people really blossomed after high school. It seemed that their change was so dramatic that many people were blown away by not only the change but also by their success.

When we die, there will be a reunion of sorts. The Bible describes a gathering of people into two groups: sheep and goats. Each group is a family of sorts. Each group will represent their respective Father. One group will be welcomed into Heaven and the other will be banished to Hell. The group that spent their life in obedience to God is called sheep. The group that spent their life in obedience to the devil is called goats. Both groups were obedient to their Fathers but only one group gains access to heaven. It is very important to make sure what Father we are obedient to right now, in this life.

Here are a few scriptures that remind us of the importance of choosing to be obedient to God.

  • Joshua 1:8: “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and
night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.”
  • Isaiah 1:19: “If you will only obey me, you will have plenty to eat.”
  • John 14:21: “Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”

We cannot be a people blessed by God if we don’t have the conviction that we are being obedient to Him. The world is in the process of lowering God’s standard and daring anyone to contradict them. Christians are being belittled, and berated for upholding a higher standard in every arena and every area of life: family, marriage, work, finances, entertainment, sex etc. There is no live and let live for the Christian although Christians are told we must live and let live for every indecency known to man.

Being blessed by God is a worthy and worthwhile occupation. Let us call on Him while it is called today. Let’s not just be people “of the Book” let us be obedient children, for it is in our obedience that we take on His characteristics. God’s plan is for His children to look like Him. Let’s purpose in our hearts to do just that.
